I was planning on hitting an early site that i had recently received permissions but conditions were less than ideal...ground is frozen solid. Plan "B" was to hit the wooded areas and hope for the best. This was found miles away from any houses or roads and was about 8 inches deep. It is most likely a lathing hatchet but I'm holding out some hope that it could be a tomahawk...input?

Either way, I'd say electrolysis - maybe pull up some markings or stamp off of it...

I'd say hatchet as well. Looks like it has a hammer end.

Did I get one right finally? ;D
Tnet member "Mojjax" told me about this book "A Museum of Early American Tools" by Eric Sloane and it has come in handy many times.

Yep, hatchet sounds good to me! I've got quite a collection of these older axes and hatchets, I'll have to think of a way to display them...
