They were a coin that you could special order, usually paying a little premium of a few dollars. They did that with the Kennedy Half Dollar also. Neat find.
 
Actually, they did it with the Ike dollar as well and now, many many coins can be bought gold plated.

Now, how many of us has dug one up? GRATS on a cool find.

The metal nickel is easily plated with gold. You can get an inexpensive gold plating kit to use at home. Plating other metals with gold is much more difficult. Gary
