1st metal detector

I know this has been asked 20 times a day but haven't seen one to suit me. I don't see a search so ill ask in this post.
I'm looking for a cheaper detector. bare bones but don't want a piece of junk. What would be a minimum price for a decent starter detector. I'm in western NY so I don't need one for water. I'm hoping to get something for under $300. I don't have any illusions of finding anything of value and will probably keep anything i find.
