Hello, I decided to post some pics of a hatchet head I found deep in the woods by a creek. I had some fun with it. Not sure of the age. I soaked it in apple cider vinegar for a month or so brushing from time to time. I'd seen this in a video and decided to try it. The handle is store bought and lightly sanded. I put a few designs on the handle with my dremel to give it some character. There you go, it can be done. Back in action. I put a nice edge on it also.

Looks pretty good do you have any before photos?

No before photo, sorry.

That's a really old hatchet and it looks good

Looks like a shingle hatchet. Used for roofing with cedar shingles. You would split the shingles with the blade, nail with the hammer side, and pull nails with the slot behind the blade. Nice restore job.

That's pretty cool

Bingo

Shingle hatchets usually have a thinner, narrower bit or blade. This is a common polled hatchet with a hammer head to make it a more all around tool. They were made right up though the 1940s at least, I have them marked KEEN KUTTER and Winchester, from the 1920s-1930s. I dang near split my head open using one when a kid, hammering away at something and cut the top of my head when I made too much of a back swing. Poll is pronounced the same as pole in axe terminology.
