Today we got a box of dimes. Kids found 2 dimes 1960, 1959... Mom found a 1963... we also found a coin that the date was not good. I am thinking it might be a laminate error? Then I found a brown dime? I can't tell if it is just discolored or if it is missing the clad. Do dimes get dark over the years?

First coin in the brown dime, the second is a 600x enlargement of a regular looking dime, but it looks like someone put a groove in near that date?

Clad turns nice and dark...gray or grayish brown...after it's been in the ground for a while.

looks like the '98 was probably dug by a detectorist and put back into circulation. the other looks like a bad strike. it seems American coins are no longer made with pride like they used to be. high production and high speed machines is what it's all about any more. seems strange seeing as how nobody seems to carry 'real' money any more.

I agree. The brown dime was definitely in the ground at some point. They usually come out like that... although I've seen them come out of the ground in several different colors depending on the ground conditions.....anywhere from dark gray all the way to a rust/orange color....

Nice finds SpecialEdTeach!

Thank you ... After checkin 250 dimes with a magnifying glass, I fully understand the true meaning of a hobby as a pass time... It did take a lot of time...but it was time well spent with my kids.. thanks.
