DAY 1
I went to a set of fields that I haven’t been to for a long time. I only had time for a short hunt so I worked on a section with 2 baseball fields. I have gridded a lot of the area, but not all of it. As usual I was looking for new losses and anything I might have missed.
I spent 3 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 75 coins with a face value of $6.16, a silver dime, an earring with a back in the same hole, a homemade sinker, a chromed brass pipe cap, a chromed turn key, some aluminum tie wire for fencing, a few pieces of can slaw and 5 tabs.
The silver dime is a 1907 Barber. It has a lot of detail with very little wear. It is grey from the moisture in the ground where it was found. Silver can be shiny, grey or black depending on the moisture in the soil. I have found enough to know this one was silver as soon as I saw it. The ONE DIME was up when I popped the plug so it was either a Barber or a seated.
DAY 2
We got a couple of inches of snow and it got colder. I only had a short time to hunt again so I went to the park closest to my house. It was 26 when I went out with a little bit of wind so not great weather. Luckily the snow insulated the the ground so it didn’t freeze which made it possible to dig.
I spent 2.5 hours swingin the CZ21 over the tot lot and one of the baseball fields and only found 15 coins with a face value of $0.95, a token, a cheapie kiddie ring, a button, a foreign coin, a pistol cartridge, a toy truck bed, a little foil, a little can slaw, a whole aluminum can and 6 tabs.
The finds were very few and far between, but the variety of finds made the hunt fun in spite of the weather. The token is a Frostburg Sesqicentennail coin from 1962. I found it in the fresh tot lot mulch. It is nice and shiny and I believe it was purchased from the local museum shop. I believe they found a cache of these token in storage and sold them as part of the fundraising for the museum. The foreign coin is a 1995 Norwegian 10 krona. When I found it I was surprised because it was a mid tone and looked like a quarter in the dirt and quarters are a high tone. The button is a modern one, but it was made to look like an old one with a big drilled shank. This was also in the fresh mulch, so another fresh loss.
DAY 3 PART 1
I went to a spot that has a tennis court, a basketball court and a practice field. I detected around the basketball court and the edges of the practice field. I had to meet someone so I only had time for a short hunt.
I spent 2.5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 58 coins with a face value of $4.83, a wheatie (1928), a ring, an earring, a vaping mouthpiece, aluminum bottle caps, can slaw, aluminum tie wire, 2 whole aluminum cans, foil and 5 tabs.
The ring is silver and a very small size and has an ornate design. The stones are CZs unfortunately, but the ring is a real beauty. My second silver this week after a long drought so I’m happy. My wife thinks it’s too fancy so I’ll add it to the save or sell batch. I already have 2 rings she likes all shined up and in boxes for her Christmas stocking.
DAY 3. PART 2
A few months ago I detected with members of the elementary school LEGO robotics team on one of my permissions. They have an interest in archeology and even though what I do is not anything like archeology they were interested in what I do. They got a permission to dig in a yard and asked me to come out and mark some targets for them to excavate. I met the advisor for the group and spent 1 hour swingin over a small back yard and putting wooden dowels in the ground to mark the spots. In a few days an archeologist is coming to show the kids how to excavate these targets. Since it is archeology and not treasure hunting I marked 20 high, mid and low tones in about a 10 by 20 foot area. I will join them when they excavate and bring my pinpointer to help facilitate the recovery.
After we marked the targets I spent a few minutes doing a little extra swingin to see what kind of things were in the yard. I dug a brass nut, some scrap aluminum siding, a 2002 penny and an old hammer. All the finds were left at the site for the kids to see. The hammer is a very unusual style. My father was a builder and he collected antique tools, but I don’t remember one like this. If anyone is familiar with this type of hammer, please let me know what it is.
DAY 4
I went to a small playground that I detected about 18 months ago. It has a tot lot, a basketball court and some all metal tables. I covered the tot lot, the area around the tables and about 70% of the remaining grassy areas. I spent 4.5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 121 coins (lots of pennies) with a face value of $6.76, part of a zipper, a ring, a dollar coin, an earbud, an anime pendant, a cheapie chain link (plated aluminum), an electrical component, aluminum tie wire, aluminum bottle caps, can slaw, foil and 24 tabs.
The ring is silver with 2 cats and a dog. It has the initials JSP on the animals. The dollar in a Susan B Anthony dated 1999. It was just under the grass so it is in nice shape.
NON DETECTOR FINDS
I found 2 pennies in the coinstar and a penny and a nickel in the parking lot. Not much but at least it’s something.
