Found this today around an old farmhouse.. Any ideas as to what it might have been used for???

Possibly the back of a harness farmers wore behind a mule driven plow?? :-\ Nice find

I found one of those last spring at an old home site that was built in the late 1700's . I never knew what it was though .
 
it looks like a 1700's belly strap buckle , yet i might be wrong. but a good find any ways
