2 Unknown SILVER antique bowls/cups with "13 1/3L" hallmark... ???

Well.... thought these are not 'detecting' finds, my sweetie and I do consider our thrift store finds as treasure. Problem is, we cannot figure out what the heck these two cups are.

So, after a week of fruitless searching, I have an excuse to come back to this wonderful site and hope that you can all get some enjoyment and intrigue out of this while helping us out. We appreciate any and all insight.

We collect silver, and I believe these to be some form of silver/sterling, but I don't want to scratch test until I know what they are. They appear to be very old. One is 2 1/8" diameter and the other is just under 2 1/4" diameter. Each one sits just over 1" tall. Both have primitive decorative engraving on the outside, and one has a shallow, reeded lip while the other has a thicker, smooth (ish) lip. One has 4 letters included in the engraving but I can't make them out (TTJK??).

Both of these bowls/cups share a hallmark stamp, which is "13 1/3L" Clearly, the "L" cannot be liters. The rest of the hallmarks are foreign to me. If I was FORCED to guess as to the country of origin, I would say India merely because of the rough engraving, though I have not seen hallmarks like this from that country.

Re: 2 Unknown SILVER antique bowls/cups with "13 1/3L" hallmark... ???

Here is a clue.

The 'L' may stand for 'LOTH'.

This was a numerical system used in Austria-Hungary and Germany-Prussia in the 18th and 19th centuries for authenticating official assays. It is based on a purity of 16/16. So that 15/16 is 15 Loth equaling .937 purity, 14/16 is 14 Loth equaling .875 purity, 13/16 is 13 Loth equaling .812 purity, and so on. Most of the antique silver from these countries found listed on eBay is 13 Loth and, as noted above, it is often misrepresented as German Sterling. Austria-Hungary used this system until 1866 and Germany-Prussia until 1886.

Still researching.

If you post them on the "garage sales finds" forum...there is a guy named cyberdan....he's pretty good with silver marks.

Thank you, DCMatt! At least that gives us somewhere to start. The ring, though seemingly more modern, would be of a near-similar purity as 13.3333 / 16.

Thanks, Keith... It has been a year since I visited and forgot/don't remember a garage sale section. I will post it there (hopefully with more reasonably sized pics...hehe) and see what else I get. In the meantime, THANK YOU DC for giving me a place to start.

Thanks! I cut these pics down and now they are in the "Garage Sale" section with more manageable sizes.

Just tidying up some blasts from the past (including some very ancient ones), largely for the benefit of anyone searching the site for information.

Those are indeed ‘Loth’ marked for fineness and from either Norway or Finland… most likely Norway. In addition to 12 Loth (.750 fine), 13 Loth (.8125 fine), 14 Loth (.875 fine) and 15 Loth (.9375 fine), both countries occasionally used odd fractionals including 13 ½, 13 1/3 and 13 ¼ before they standardised their hallmarking regimes. Such marks are from the first part of the 19th Century (and not later than 1891).

In Finland the standard was referred to as “Luoti” and in Norway as “Lõdig”, both using the letter ‘L’ to denote the standard.

The other marks will be regional/city and maker marks but will take some tracking f=down to reliably assign them if indeed they can be traced at all.
