Can someone please help me settle a debate between some other forum members and me? I recently found this coin in circulation. It is a 2000 S Virginia quarter.

Some other members are saying this is not a proof. They’re saying that there are coins with S mint marks that are proofs, but not all coins with S mint marks are proofs.

I personally believe this is a proof. Look at the mirror background. You can actually see my finger and part of the camera reflected in the background.

It’s also got really sharp detail.

Here is a picture in better light.

Please help me settle this debate. Is this a proof, or is it not?

These photos do look more like a proof than the ones in your other thread. Could be. If it is, it would be an "impaired proof" at this point since it was removed from its protective packaging and has been circulated.

First off, I want to apologize for my anger. I’m having a very stressful day, my grandpa has dementia, and is causing problems. I’m very sorry for my outburst. I ask for forgiveness.

Second, I’m very confused. Some people say it’s a proof, some people say it’s not. It’s causing a lot of confusion in my ADHD mind.

I wish there was a way to know for sure.

Sorry, that post went on the wrong thread.

It looks like it started out as a proof to me. As mentioned, it's now an impaired proof, which means it's worth a whopping $.25. Collectors of proofs won't want it, and collectors of business strikes would rather have a nice MS68 than an impaired proof.

I agree. It’s an impaired proof.

Still, it may not be worth much, but at least I found something.

Agreed, it's still cool.

Finds don't have to be worth anything to be great. Some of my favorite finds aren't worth anything to anyone but me.

YES
Your quarter was minted using the specailly prepared dies for proof coins. It clearly shows the mirrored background and frosty cameo details.

Furthermore, San Francisco has not produced quarters for circulation since 1954....so no doubt it is a proof...did you get lucky and is it a silver proof?

No, it’s a clad.

I did not know this. So my saying that not all S mint marks are proofs was wrong for the year 2000. The San Francsico mint does produce coins that are not proofs (the mint refers to them as “circulation quality”), but they aren’t released into circulation, just sold to collectors. But they hadn’t restarted doing that until 2012, so there would not have been any of those in 2000. So yes, this coin was a proof. Thanks for the correction!

Yes it is a proof... 100 % positive.

Looks like it is one struck at the end of the die life.
