perhaps y'all might have answers--- a good thing to do on a rainy week in the Finger Lakes, go through my collection---1) a baggage tag from the C & J RR, Canandaigua, N.Y. (what's the J for??) 2) two aluminum licences from Seneca County© 1900 made by C.H. Morse and Son (what did they licence?) and what looks like to me, a petrified tooth!! I'll be asking the Paleontological Research Institution just down the road from me in Ithaca--- Screen shot 2018-07-24 at 5.04.54 PM.webp

CH Morse purchased the Eclipse Wind Engine Co. From Fairbanks in 1890 and the company became Fairbanks Morse.

That tooth looks to be the size and shape of an Elk Ivory. -Elk have two tiny tusks in their upper mouth. They are a remanent of their pre historic bloodline when they had long tusks like elephants.

thanks for all the info coming in!! what a great team y'all are!! I had no idea Watkins was Jefferson!! I'll check more into that so I can date that tag, dang, if I can find the location in my 30 yr log book. (just checked 'Wiki'- changed in 1929 One Solved!! Now, wonder about that licencing, I could check with the Co historian to see if they know what kind of licences were given out that year--

Tpmetal,
ah, sure, I spent some time in Alfred back in '73/74! lived in Almond for a season or two. How's the hunting out by you? old basements just like here I would think. Have you read any of Arch Merrell's books on the Southern Tier? great tips on detecting sites!! (places I have not hit--yet)---
ps, I use to 'steetsing' on both campuses way back then----fond memories

Bologna321, that was my first thought when found also, bicycle licenses, though I have not found any evidence of them yet. They come from Seneca Co, but were found in Six Mile Creek down in Ithaca, Tompkins Co, 40 miles away at the other end of Cayuga Lake. Over the years I have also found tiny gold plated cycling lapel pins, so it was a big sport at the turn of that century, fer sure.
