(3) LARGE day for Bergie & Earthworks
Today we headed out to the woods and high hill near the Hudson River. This is a pretty new spot for us, with Earthworks and I both finding 1849 large cents (about 50 yards apart and one day apart) last time we went out, along with several Indians and some other cool stuff. Last time Earthworks also found 1899 Barber half and 1897 Barber quarter, both in great shape.
So, today we were pretty fired up to go for it again. We were rechecking the hill when I saw this really cool bottle, kind of pink tone to it in the light...I usually don't keep bottles, but this one I kept because it led to my next find. Once I saw the bottle I said, wonder if "the dude" who left it dropped anything. I don't know if it was them or someone else, but a minute later I got a nice copper signal and dig, dig, dig...Large Cent! -- 1853. Earthworks was right there and we did the high five, then I told him back away you are getting a little too close for my comfort. :-) He was detecting the same area about five minutes later and bingo, big signal...dig, dig...he calls me over saying this one sounds like prior large cents...I am down there and he digs some more and I yell "THERE IT IS" -- it had flipped over on it's edge and was sticking 1/4 out of the dirt sideways, but he didn't see it. I had to point right to it and he picked it out of the dirt with great joy -- 1843. Congrats all around and off we went. I found this cool thing that he says is a powder holder for the old muskets. Could anyone confirm? What is pictured is half of the item. The other half is a mirror image of this one, so they would fit together. Appears to be copper. I did find a fired musketball on the hill today. We also found a few Indians and some other stuff. See my post on the Steam Boat Token too...Then a great ending for me. Earthworks had to go, despite me bugging him to stay...About 45 minutes later I'm detecting back closer to the main road, but still in the woods, thinking about leaving....big copper signal, dig, dig, dig....Large Cent #2! Nice one, too. 1825. Going to give it over to Earthworks to photograph and post later this week. Great day with 3 larges. Thanks for looking, and thanks to Earth for the photos.
