It was back to the wagon trails today, I hunt up one side about a 1/4 mile, then turn around and hunt the other on the way back to the car, drive up a bit and do it again. Gets kinda boring after a while :tongue3: I thought the bridge was pretty cool having a date and all. This is actually the 2nd 1919 dog tag I found :headbang: so it goes on the keyring in order with the rest ive found. Also scored 2 Indians 1898 and A 1902, and a V nic 1899.
enjoy,
Pro-

I'd say those are some really nice finds. The dog tag is sweet!

always nice when all the coins are oldies!

A couple years ago I traveled about 250 miles round trip to the beach... and came home with 52 cents. best find was a wheat cent

lmao, yeah, I had days where Id drive a 100 miles for nothing.

By the time you finish your road, you should have a nice batch of finds. Most of the old roads in my area have been transformed into deep gravel. Way to stay at it!

a really cool hunt you partaking in! look forward to seeing what else you find!

Nice finds . Fyi that object to the right of the Ih is whats left of a small crotal bell . i foundthe exact same desing on mine this spring. Also late fall or early spring will much more come out of the woods along this road. I found an old trail that produced these same coins along with a barber quarter and my first seated quarter. much more to come from there .best of luck Rob

Sounds like a few of my trips......only I didn't find any older coins! Those trips are still fun though. Very cool finds.

Well worth the trip in my book. Great finds at a super location, very cool.

Yeah, I have a growing collection of those, :tongue3: :laughing9:

I bet I'm the only person on this forum besides you and possibly MUD who knows where that bridge is. It's on Bull Hill off Rte. 13! Good job finding those coins- I never had much luck in that area. Did you find the sawmill site down on the creek yet? It looked promising when I located it, but I didn't spend enough time there to find anything. Someone with more patience might have better luck.

Wasn't the old schoolhouse site real close to the bridge too? Someone cleaned that out long before I got to it. I only dug a rusty pocket knife there in many visits.

:laughing9: I never found the mill, I walked that clearing all the way down but couldnt find any remnints on the other side of the stream, one of the indians were found on the road by the school, Last year at the next intersection down I must have found about 12 large cents and a nice batwing buckle. They were on the right side of the road directly across from the intersection. Im not sure i want to look for that mill again, the hike back up is a killer :laughing9:

Yes, the mill site was hard to find. There was a cliff or very steep hill in between the road and the site that made it just about impossible. I recall going down it on my butt and not finding the mill. I later found it by going down a power line cutting and walking the creek for about a half mile until I found the likely site. I identified it only by finding iron and lead in the ground on the stream banks. There were no stones or other remnants. I didn't find any coins or buttons, so maybe the area was flooded out. I don't know why, but I was feeling impatient and only stayed about 15 minutes after all that hiking.

Good job on the large cents. I'll have to look at my old maps and see if I remember the area where you found the stuff. I'm always curious to know what I missed. I gave up on that general area after getting my car stuck in the mud horribly on one of those roads in April of 1999. I thought I would not ever get my car out because it was so far from the main road, and no tow truck could get in there without getting stuck itself. I somehow managed to pile enough stones under the wheels of my car to get traction and blast out of there, but it was real lucky. How would you like to walk back to Ithaca from there? I didn't have a cell phone to call a friend at that time, so it would have been either walk, or hitch-hike.

1999? ...I didnt purchase a detector till 03. Im interested in some of the silver you found back then, you must have been going up Ct hill also, ever find any seated or bust up there? I must have pulled close to 50 large cents from there, one seated dime, one barber dime, 2 rosies A 1824 bust half, 14k gold ring, numerous indians and a nice civil war sword plate. Im also wondering if any of the school house privys were ever dug. I only started going up there 3 yrs ago, would really like to know what was found up there, and at what sites. I have about 4 different maps for those areas all dating from 1866 to 1909, I also have a book about the hill, tells who was who, how many kids they had, how much land they owned and all thier out buildings, gives a very in depth description of the families and when they arrived there. My oldest coin from up there is A 1800 half cent. There has to be more silver up there...

the powerline trail is the one I followed to find the mill, yeah it gets pretty muddy up there in the spring, I dont venture too far in till things dry up. They smoothed out some of those roads this year too, makes for easier driving, lol

I never found anything good on Ct. Hill except a 1943 Walking half on my first trip up there. It was in a small picnic site coming down the side of the mountain, where people used to park their RVs years ago. I did make about 10 trips to Ct. Hill, but I was looking around the obvious places that everyone else already hit, like the schoolhouse site next to the cemetery, and the other sites right next to the road. Totally wrong approach. I thought my machine wasn't going deep enough, or I wasn't doing something right, because I had just started detecting in 1998 and didn't know the ropes yet- so I kept hitting the same places and trying different detecting techniques, thinking I was doing it wrong. What I should have been doing was hiking through the woods and looking for obscure structures that had not been hit previously to find those big, easy large cents! I think you told me at one point that most of your large cents and other finds came out of the hidden sites that were off in the bushes, so that idea is probably right. Did you find anything right next to the road in the obvious places? After a few months of driving to Ct. Hill, I just gave up because I found three really excellent sites in my neighborhood near Cornell, which were producing Barber coins regularly- so I decided not to waste any more gas driving up the mountain to sites that were unproductive, when I could walk 100 yards from my apartment and get silver all day long. I then moved to MD in 2000, PA in 2003, and TX in 2009. I enjoy reading your posts because it reminds me of the really good detecting days in Ithaca. It is really funny to see a picture of that 1925 bridge I stood on 12 years ago, which is in the middle of friggin' nowhere! Keep posting the pics! I'll be lucky to use my detector once this summer- maybe hit some abandoned mining towns in NM or something.

Besides the obvious schoolhouse next to the Cem., there is another accessible schoolhouse on the Schuyler Co. side of the mountain that looked really promising. There were two obvious privys (square settled areas) there that had not been dug. Again, I found nothing of any consequence there, but it was one of the most promising looking sites I have seen. Someone else probably got there first, though. However, you might have some luck digging those privys, if you have the patience. That road is really remote, and I can't even remember how to get over there.

The schoolhouse next to the cemetary didnt see much action according to my book, something about there not being teachers available, it was mainly used for funeral services/ town meetings. Ive been to every site on the maps, theres 4 schoolhouse sites, one was at the top of a steep steep hill, the hill was used for sledding in the winter. Most of my better coins were found on the sites on that road, one site had 17 children living there, thier driveway was half a mile long to a site that produced my silver half, A hard times token and about 6 large cents. I know what school your talking about, Ive been there a few times. check the pics, maybe itll look familiar.
