Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

I agree with Molly, it looks like a Yadkin to me and a very nice one at that.

Congrats and thanks for the picture.

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

Thanks. I'll stick with PeeDee though. Now if I can just find one like that of clear crystal.

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

Peedee points are wider, thicker, cruder points, smaller too.
Still no matter what you call it, its a nice find.

Molly.

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

Steve, that's a sweet Pentagonal/Peedee point, there are much cruder here in NC, in shape & material.

Molly. :)

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

Thanks Molly. That's the best one I've ever found. It is thin as a piece of paper too. I have a couple others but they are kind of crude and rough like the ones you find.

This is the site tray of all the pieces from that particular site. It consists of two very long fields side by side and two small fields at the ends of those.

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

Very nice, I like them all but especially the smaller brown banded point, right, bottom side.
I didn't think you framed brokes Steve.
I find all my points out of one area, one campsite, so I find enough points to make whole frames & brokes frames.

Thankyou for posting those. Very nice.

Molly. :)

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

I'm not going to argue about projectile point classifications...I've found a lot of Yadkins, Pee Dees, Savannah Rivers, Guilfords, etc. I classify all of my points from research done in North Carolina by Joffre Lanning Coe, (google him) who worked as lead archaeologist at many of the sites in NC and named most of the points in this area. When they were excavating the Town Creek Indian Mound, he and his workers found and classified 21,306 points at that site. He also worked the Hardaway and Doerschuk sites and gave the Hardaway its name. Regardless of what we classify our finds they give us great insight into those cultures long turned to dust. In the future I will simply identify my finds as "projectle points." Happy hunting.

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

I do apologise, I didn't realise you were an expert on NC typology, you should have said.

Please feel free to tell us what you think your finds are. I got the impression you was new, I sincerely apologise, I'll not make any more comments, I don't want to ruffle your feathers.

Happy hunting & Good luck.

Molly.

Re: 3" PeeDee Triangular

Yeah, same here. I didn't realize you were an expert and I didn't mean to upset you. I was just trying to help. You can call your points anything you want.

Molly, there is nothing broken in that tray. If you are referring to the point in the center it has been reworked into a Hafted Scraper, you just can't tell it from the picture. It has very fine secondary flaking all along the edge where the break was. But, I do however frame some broken pieces if they identifiable and I'm doing a site tray such as this one.

Thanks for your comments.

Never feel shy about posting your pictures. There are some fine folks on here and we will do our level best to help you along and never make you feel bad. You can try the link I provided above to ID points or you can go to this site and get some great books. Hope this helps and that you decide to post some pics of your finds.
