Long story short. Annual white elephant sale at the Methodist Church. Lots of different rooms all categorized by types of items in them. Went into the "antiques and collectibles room and there they were; Five sterling silver plates, all in original boxes, all marked 25.00 ea. I had twenty on me and none in the bank. Bought one of the plates an official Jimmy Carter Inaugural plate for 20.00 The lady also threw in a big old pack of paperwork in a box titled "The opening of the West" need to do more research on that one. anyway I digress. Called the wife to see what was in our joint account...not enough. :( Desperate times call for desperate measures. I gathered up my 5 oz of silver change and took it to the local gold and bullion exchange. They gave me 9 times face value and didn't pay based on weight :( So, I took my 53.00 and went back to the white elephant sale. One plate had been sold but three remained. The very, very sweet lady accepted my offer of 53.00 for the remaining three. So in total I got 4 sterling silver plates totaling roughly 35 oz and paid 73.00 for all of them...you do the math. ;D Pictures forthcoming but the plates are as follows:

1977 Official Inaugural Jimmy Carter plate, issued by the inaugural committee
James Wyeth riding to the hunt plate by the Franklin Mint
Lincoln mint 1972 mothers day plate
1974 Mothers day plate from Wittnauer mint

The plate I really wanted and waas sold was a Bicentennial 24k gold etched silver plate by the Danbury mint.

Think I did pretty well though...all going up on the bay this weekend.

WOW!. . . you did well

You might want to check out "Jamie Wyeth" on ebay. . . some of his
art & related memorabilia created by second parties can be quite pricey.

Nice score!

Pictures as promised

wow you turned $73 into $650 PLUS!!

We bought four like those at a yard sale a couple of years ago before the price of silver went up as much as it is now. Paid 10$ each for them . I think they are all Franklin Mint! I'll have to take them out of the safe and look at them again to be sure but they were all made by the same maker and had belonged to an older Gentleman who was a big collector of many things and his family was trying to sell off a lot of his stuff after he had passed away.

Really Nice finds!! Plus your pics are great!!! Thanks for sharing.

Bill

I found one of those James Wyeth plates for $9 at goodwill. Rock on :headbang:

I will have to keep an eye out for one of these wow what a find. Ever go to a sale like that and run outta cash tell them you will write a check and come back with the cash they hold the check for you sometimes it works.
This reminds me of the movie gold finger they could not figure out how the man was smuggling gold into the country and the car was made of gold. No one would expect such a large item to be made of silver it just doesn't occur that would be so. I have been looking for these everywhere I go now that I know they exists.

Awesome find.:leprechaun-hat:

I would melt them all down in about 9.2 seconds of getting home. A great score, congrats!
