For those who can't ascertain the query due to the photo quality, the OP is wondering about the double stamped date. Sag has the advertisement and I'm sure he'll post it. The double stamped half was offered by third-party marketers. It carries no additional value.

It's a 1983 , with two other markings !!

Ive seen many of these. Plated in gold, silver, chrome, copper and stamped. I save them to give to the kids in the neighborhood's lemonade stand.

Yes. The third-party marketers were making a windfall stamping clad halves. They produced them for a number of years. Keep it if you like as it is a novelty, but they carry no additional value beyond the face value.

Wow, this got interesting. Wondering how many they moved, and what was their plating cost? Do you all know what years they were offered? Government actually makes out with the sales tax, then profit taxes. And most aren't circulated after.

The government didn't make any profit as they weren't offered by the government. The third-party marketers bought half dollars at face value; defaced the coin; and then marketed them as a tribute to Kennedy.

I know. That's why I stated sales tax and tax on the profit. Tax here is profit. 1000 percent is good profit!
So how many can be plated with an ounce of 24kt. I would think they use gold leaf.

I think someone said they used like 50 micrograms of gold, which is 1.60753733 × 10[SUP]-6
troy oz. of gold.

I'm guessing the gold plating is only worth a couple of cents extra?

I doubt they used gold leaf. way too hard to put on neatly and too messy, crumbly. like extra thin aluminum foil.

I used to have a stack of these in my "cool but not worth much" pile. I wonder how many I would have to have in order to even get 1/16th oz of gold...
