3rd Cast Lead Counterfeit

All found at same site.
Lead casting happened here, found hundreds of mackeral jigs, net & fishing weights,
slag hunks everywhere, & a 30 lb stamped Chadwick ingot.
The piece found yesterday was folded, figured it was a slug used for fishing weight.
When I cleaned it, I saw some detail & pried it open, voila, reverse inside,
wreath & 'One Cent', Wreath resembles Draped style, which is one of the earlier ones I found, the other one is a George 11-111.
The weights on all are all wrong. (over), They are very poor copies.
I think they were producing these right here.

That is really neat to find them at one site, and you are probably correct that it might have been the site where they were made, hope another one or two are found there!

The lead has corroded over time, so the originals were probably better.

Imagine a counterfeit cent. Things are getting so bad now, it probably wouldn't pay to run ones out of the printer...........

I love it when the finds tell the story of the activities of the earlier generations at a site ! Especially the illegal undocumented activities of our ansesters ! I hope you find some more evidence to prove your theory ! Good post and finds ! MaineRelic

Dave, I just dig almost everything that beeps.
It's more the sites than the skills I believe.
I have attempted short hunts at 2 promising foundations, & 2 early 1700s homesites, and just can't seem to read much through all the ferrous junk, I read a recent post that said 'anyone can find things at a 'clean' site, it's the hunters who can scan through the iron that get the finds'
I mostly hunt coastal areas from Mass to Maine, and often at a new rockpile or old boatyard, there will be finds sitting visible on the surface, though the price for hunting here is getting a lot of toasted items.
I have been practicing my patience with scanning slower & digging deeper hits that have questionable readings, with some success.
Coming to the end of my first season enjoying this hobby/obsession,
I am striving to increase my patience and skill.
I've been very fortunate in my first year, and I am grateful to the members of treasurenet for all your responses and help with ID's

Thanks very much for sharing your hunting experience in such detail with us all Herbie.
It means a lot to guys like me that have only been metal detecting as a hobby for 7 months.
As you mentioned, patience is the key and slowing down the swing to hear those faint signals.
