4 Hour hunt/some injuns..silver & FINALLY a FIRST after 30 years..an 1862 FATTY

Today was a RARE morning for me....10:00 to 2:00 FREE. :tongue3: I headed to the old worn out park a few miles away. We used to hold club hunts here back in the late 80's and early 90's. Lots of great stuff came out of here for lots of people. I found some deepies there last year too.
I started to hunt and hadn't swung the coil 10 times before I saw an older lady walking her dog towards me. She was smiling and I love animals...so I took off the headphones and set the SE down. The little dog was trotting my way so I put out my hands to pet him. :icon_sunny: He ignored me :tongue3: ...sauntered by me... then promptly hiked up his leg and tinkled on my coil. :headbang: Wonderful! ;D He then let me pet him...the lady apologized...and they went on their way.
Back to hunting...and boy did it heat up quickly. Within 5 minutes I popped out a badly corroded injun from 9". Kept playing around the same area and within another 15 minutes got another deep signal. This was a crazy signal :icon_scratch:...yet peeped high tone at times that begged to be dug. I thought..."no way I should really dig this"..as I bent down to cut a plug. ::) I cut a deep plug and ran the probe in the hole...nothing. ??? I dug another 3" out of the hole then ran the probe again...and it sang...yippee! From 9" to 10"...out popped the 1918 merc on edge.
After about 40 minutes I got a weird low signal...the kind that I rarely pay any attention to...BUT it had the slightest high tone with it. The cursor started about 1/2" up from the bottom right of the screen...then bounced straight left 3/4 accross the screen where it locked on where I have my iron mask set at. :o Again...I do not usually dig lower hits like this...but something in the tone of the signal obviously made me want to dig... and the depth meter was buried...so I did. I got down a good 8" and the probe was still singing. I plopped out another big chunk of dirt and saw an imprint of a green circle. I thought..."what the heck"...no way a wheatie or injun puts off a low tone like that. :D I dug out another clod and from right at 10" down...out popped the 1862 Fatty Injun  ...my FIRST in 30 years of huntin'. It ain't purty...but's it's ALL MINE! ;D
After that...the coins just kept comin'. EVERY coin I dug over the next 3 hours was 8" to 10" deep. All three of the other injuns came from over 9" down. :o
Even though I am still pumped over finding my first ever fatty...one of my favorite finds of all time also came today. From 10" down came the beautiful "stretched" wheatie that has the Lord's Prayer imprinted on it. :sunny: :angel12: It is in great shape and you can clearly read each and every word on it. I will NEVER forget digging it the same hunt I found my first fatty injun. :angel11:
What a great 4 hour hunt at a POUNDED park.

Hey Bryce, That looks like a great hunt. Terrific finds. Thanks for your detailed description of your signals, they really help me out. Had 2 bouncers the other day that had a slight high tone but mostly stayed toward iron, But would give a 04-28 occasionally in digital and bounce to the upper right in smart screen. One was a wheaty at 8 inches and the other was a dime at 10 inches that I thought for sure was going to be silver at that depth, but was a 72 clad, oh well I learned something. Again thanks for the help.
JDD
Thanks JDD. I'm glad to have been of some help on the signals, Sounds like you are really starting to nail some deepies. PS: Don't you HATE it when you get a "for sure" silver deepie..and it turns out to be clad ;D

Great finds! As for the dog mistaking your coil for a fire hydrant, I guess you have to take the bitter with the sweet.
;D :D Thanks Halfdime.

Nice finds SF,

Those fatties are hard to come by. They read pulltab all day long. Same with the flying eagle. Congrats on getting that first one.

HH Jer
Thanks Jer. I never dig those lower hits cause' I'm too busy concentrating on deep silver hits. It seems like I'm always pressed for time too. ???

Bryce,
Congrats on the wonderful great finds and great post. That fatty is awesome! That stretched penny is very cool too. :icon_king:
It amazes me when people like you, Captn Dan, & Ant to name a few, find old coins in parks like that. After all of the years of being detected and there's STILL stuff to be found. AWESOME!!!
Way to go on a very successful hunt.

Thanks clump. The fatty was a needle in a haystack for me. I just never have time to dig lower hits like that. I always concentrate more on the deep silver hits...but the depth meter was buried...so I dug

Thanks Shawn. Indian head cents were close to 40% thicker and heavier from 1859 to 1863. I believe in 1864 is when they were made lighter and less thick than all other indian headc cents.
