4 Hour hunt/some injuns..silver & FINALLY a FIRST after 30 years..an 1862 FATTY

Today was a RARE morning for me....10:00 to 2:00 FREE. :tongue3: I headed to the old worn out park a few miles away. We used to hold club hunts here back in the late 80's and early 90's. Lots of great stuff came out of here for lots of people. I found some deepies there last year too.
I started to hunt and hadn't swung the coil 10 times before I saw an older lady walking her dog towards me. She was smiling and I love animals...so I took off the headphones and set the SE down. The little dog was trotting my way so I put out my hands to pet him. :icon_sunny: He ignored me :tongue3: ...sauntered by me... then promptly hiked up his leg and tinkled on my coil. :headbang: Wonderful! ;D He then let me pet him...the lady apologized...and they went on their way.
Back to hunting...and boy did it heat up quickly. Within 5 minutes I popped out a badly corroded injun from 9". Kept playing around the same area and within another 15 minutes got another deep signal. This was a crazy signal :icon_scratch:...yet peeped high tone at times that begged to be dug. I thought..."no way I should really dig this"..as I bent down to cut a plug. ::) I cut a deep plug and ran the probe in the hole...nothing. ??? I dug another 3" out of the hole then ran the probe again...and it sang...yippee! From 9" to 10"...out popped the 1918 merc on edge.
After about 40 minutes I got a weird low signal...the kind that I rarely pay any attention to...BUT it had the slightest high tone with it. The cursor started about 1/2" up from the bottom right of the screen...then bounced straight left 3/4 accross the screen where it locked on where I have my iron mask set at. :o Again...I do not usually dig lower hits like this...but something in the tone of the signal obviously made me want to dig... and the depth meter was buried...so I did. I got down a good 8" and the probe was still singing. I plopped out another big chunk of dirt and saw an imprint of a green circle. I thought..."what the heck"...no way a wheatie or injun puts off a low tone like that. :D I dug out another clod and from right at 10" down...out popped the 1862 Fatty Injun  ...my FIRST in 30 years of huntin'. It ain't purty...but's it's ALL MINE! ;D
After that...the coins just kept comin'. EVERY coin I dug over the next 3 hours was 8" to 10" deep. All three of the other injuns came from over 9" down. :o
Even though I am still pumped over finding my first ever fatty...one of my favorite finds of all time also came today. From 10" down came the beautiful "stretched" wheatie that has the Lord's Prayer imprinted on it. :sunny: :angel12: It is in great shape and you can clearly read each and every word on it. I will NEVER forget digging it the same hunt I found my first fatty injun. :angel11:
What a great 4 hour hunt at a POUNDED park.

Alright, Bryce!! Way to Go, Buddy!!!! I've never dug a "Fatty" before. I'm sure they have a lower tone profile than wheaties do. All the 1800's Injuns I dug yesterday sounded lower than a zinc penny (in Conduct). I dug these tones because I know from previous experience how they sound. The Lord's prayer on a Wheat penny is a cool find too. It's good to get that one out of the ground.

You had an awesome hunt!! I just love finding Injuns...more so than a merc/rosie!!

Congrats,
CAPTN SE

Thanks Dan. Same thing as you stated on the other 3 injuns I dug. They were definately lower sound than a zinc penny...but I LOVE those hits...cause' I know from the sound...it's a good shot at an injun. I agree 100% with you...I love diggin injuns just as much as silver. Take care buddy.

Hi Storm. Not a stupid question at all. They are very thick...much thicker and fatter than a regular indian head penny.

Well done silverfreak! I've had similar experiences as your day (high depth, plenty of oldies comming) with my explorer, but have never found the fatty. It may be because I wasn't as prudent at digging what would normally be a junk signal. :'( Keep up the good work! ;D

Re: 4 Hour hunt/some injuns..silver & FINALLY a FIRST after 30 years..an 1862 FATTY

Congrats on the fatty IH Bryce! I'm starting to think no deepy is safe from the wrath of your coil ;D

I was just looking at a '61 fatty I had in my "not dug" collection today and noticed how thick it actually is compared to the ones I had dated after 1900. Did the fatties change thickness in 1864, when they went to bronze? My source doesn't specify exactly what year they got thinner.

Congrats on that first and all those other super finds! I'll say that most of my good keepers here lately have been from digging signals that I wouldn't normally bother with. :icon_scratch: Guess we need to dig it all! :D

Awesome hunt! Congrats! Nana

The coins that were struck between 1859 and 1864 were composed of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, as required by law. In 1864, the weight of the coins was reduced from 72 grains to the present weight of 48 grains, and the alloy changed to 95 percent copper and 5 percent tin and zinc. Research in 1863 indicated that bronze was an excellent alloy for minor coins, and so the copper-nickel alloy was discontinued. Total production of the Indian Head cent was 1,849,648,000 pieces.
