Pennies wreak havoc on Delaware traffic [photos] ? NewsWorks

One lane of traffic is squeezing by, after a truck carrying blank pennies to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia overturned on NB I-95 early Thursday morning.

Snarled.

That's the best way to describe traffic conditions through northern Delaware following the tractor-trailer accident overnight. Delaware State Police said the truck overturned where I-295 splits off of I-95 towards the Delaware Memorial Bridge at 1:53 a.m., spilling 40,000 pounds of unstamped pennies on the highway.

The accident shut down the interstate and cleanup lasted through the morning rush hour, causing hours-long backups.

While the driver only suffered minor injuries, the impact on Thursday morning traffic has been major. DelDOT traffic cameras showed major backups throughout the area on northbound roadways as crews worked to clean up the mess.
