Any idea of how this could happen, years after the 1969 40% production run was over? I know it may be a strange event, but after 8-years ? I guess it has happened, and that it's slabbed and certified; now if it only belonged to you. Thanks for showing us.

i am willing to bet that blank planchets get lost within the machines over the years. As in within the nook and crannies of the machines. Then one day years later, someone takes apart the machine to do service or cleaning and fines the blank planchets and tosses them into the next machine that is stamping out coins and BAM! that is how these rare coins are born. It would not surprise me if there are a few 1983+ 95% copper cents as well...

Surely it' a carry over from the '76 40%ers and not from 1969-1970.

That's right. There was a business-strike 40% 1976.
One of the 1976 planchets got tucked in the seam of a bin used in the pre-strike process and then came loose and got processed along with the cladded copper in 1977.

Nah, there have been quite a few found for that year. Just like some have been found for 1971.
