45-S War 5c, 44-D Merc dime, '94-D clad Half, and '45 Merc MICRO "S" mint mark!

Hello fellow T-Netters!

Yesterday I went out detecting on my lunch hour (lunch two hour) because my office is kinda slow at the end of the month. I dug the usual clad, five wheat cents, and a 1945-S War nickel.

Then after work on Friday I went out again and met up with Ron to do some more detecting. I dug a 1994-D Clad half dollar, 1944-D Mercury dime, 1945-S Mercury dime, and a couple more wheats. When I got home and cleaned up the coins I noticed that the 1945-S Merc dime was a listed variety ~ It's got the "micro" S mint mark! I looked through my other 1945-S Merc dimes and I'm pretty sure this is the only MICRO "S" that I've ever dug! The MICRO "S" is noticably much smaller that the normal "S" mint mark.

The RED BOOK states that these 1945-S MICRO "S" dimes are unexplained. This style of "S" was used on the Philippine coins that the US mint produced from 1907 to 1920.

The 1945 Merc is my 75th silver coin find of the year ~ and the 1945 War nickel is my 16th War nickel this year.

Thanks for looking!
Neil
