Returned for a quick hunt to the Liberty Cap site after work today. Very slim pickings, mainly trash targets in the hot spot area that I was hoping if removed would unmask something nice. Well...pulled a 14k gold ring with nice amethyst (possible alexandrite, going to nail it down) stone! As others have said, if you want to find gold, dig nickel/pulltab tones. On the etrac is was a 11-09 all day and I was expecting the mouth part of a can but alas this beauty was looking back at me.

Happy hunting!

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Very Nice, congrats!

Now that's an awesome ring! Congrats! :occasion14:

Nice find and congrats! Make sure to check the stone in different lighting (natural, regular light bulb and incandescent lighting) as many folks mistake Alexandrite for Amethyst. If Alexandrite, the stone will change colors from Magenta hues to Purple hues to Blue hues to Green hues and quite a few color hues in between. Even if it is not Alexandrite, dark Amethyst stones (gems) are highly desired and especially so if they are natural stones.

Great point huntsman! I noticed this as well. This stone did appear to change to a blue hue in different lighting making me wonder whether it was indeed an amethyst or an alexandrite. Am taking it to a jeweler this week to let me know what I'm working with. Will update when I have something.

Very nice ring, congratulations on the save

Take very detailed and closeup pics of the Gem in case you need them for identification and be careful when taking it to a Jeweler unless they are highly respected. It would also be best to take it to a Jeweler at a highly respected Jewelry Store. I say this because if the stone is natural, is Alexandrite, is near or 100% color change and is a high quality gem with an excellent cut, a questionable Jeweler would try their best to switch stones on you because of the value of the gem. I have only seen one large, natural, 100% color change Russian Alexandrite that was nearly flawless with a superb cut and it was worth more per carat than most flawless Diamonds and it was 3.5 or 3.75 carats. My friend Rocky (God rest his soul), a Marine Veteran who received degrees in Geology and Gemology appraised the gem for a lady that lived fairly nearby.

The link below will give you some real good info on Alexandrite Gems and some info on pricing of them.

You were hoping to pull something nice and you sure did!

Congratulations and keep swingin.

Id it is indeed Alexandrite, make sure you let us know? That would be beyond Banner material! What a beauty.

Will do. I have yet to take it anywhere but will do so shortly. Knowing very little about jewelry I will be the pessimist and assume its synthetic or not particularly expensive. If it turns out to be 100% color change style Alexandrite, as you say, we are talking some bucks. In any event, it was fun to find and worthless or worthwhile, I'm happy.

Best,
H

Very interesting thread = educational. Congratulations on a wonderful find.

That ring wasn't of the commercial class of jewelry most folks today get, the 10k stuff. That stone mounted on that 14k band would be a step up and there wouldn't be a cheap stone in that mount.

Seemingly using LOGIC - You have a danged good find there.

That's a very nice Gold ring you found. Hope the Stone is added value. No matter, its beautiful. Congrats!!
