there is a very real "pirate treasure" that of Luis Aury * he took over the island of Fernandina , Florida in Oct of 1817 from the Spanish - he was "privateering" under the flags of Mexico and Venezula which were in revolt against Spain at the time ..while on his way to Florida from Texas one of his pirate fleet vessels took a Spanish owned slave ship with 95 slaves aboard --upon taking control;of Fernandina --Aury set up "court" and declared the vessel and slaves " as "war booty' and sold the 95 slaves to William Bowden of Georgia for 60,000 --- a bill of sale was drafted and given to Bowden *--later on the slaves were taken from Bowden by us troops in "West Florida" as being "illegaly imported from Africa" to America in violation of the American 1803 anti African importation slave act --which forbade any farther importation of slaves from Africa. -- the Spanish ship owner when he found out that the governor of Georgia had sold his slaves as "contraband" sued , saying that his slaves were stolen on the high seas and illegally taken to America against his will or wishes --and that the slaves once found should have been returned to him -- Bowden claimed he had bought the slaves as "war booty" from Aury and had a bill of sale o prove it * the court did not uphold Bowdens / Aury Bill of sale (but it worth noting that the amount of 60,000 was the "price" paid *)-- Aury was taken prisoner in Dec of 1817 by US Forces on Amelia island --less than 2 months after the slaves were sold * Aury never left the island during that time , and having control of the island got whatever he wanted for "free' - after holding Aury for 2 months without being able to make any hanging type charges "stick" to Aury --the US Govt told him to leave and never return upon pain of death --Aury left broke * his vessels were search stem to stern --no treasure was reported as found upon him or his vessels --so somewhere on Amelia Island , Florida there maybe a stash of 60,000 in 1817 era silver and gold money.

however personally I think that the 60,000 was used to pay off Gregor Mc Gregor and his 55 merc's for "control" of the island and that the money left the island in the pockets of the mercs and Mc Gregor --* but even if so --it was reported that Aury had a booming business -- that of letting other pirates of Spanish goods sell their hot goods in his port for a 1/6th cut of the price * that too would have generated a large sum of money very quickly -- the loss of trade and taxes for the state of Georgia was what lead the US to "remove" Aury from Amelia Island.-- since Aury left broke what became of those "missing" funds?
