:D Told you last night I would get 5 scrappies :icon_pirat:

:icon_sunny: :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny: Spent 3.5 hours on my own with my friend 'iced water' :tongue1:

Covered a small (less than 1 acre) game strip that Dad & I did last year with a few Roman Coins & 1 Iron Age Bronze Unit.

As well as the coins, I had a small section (catchplate) of a Roman Fibula, 1/2 a Medieval Buckle, & a Roman Mount of a kind I haven't seen before. It has a Crescent on top & a Celtic feel to it, I like it but needs more research.

The large Roman Iron Nail is the typical type we find on Roman Sites, it was over 10" deep.

Cru, it seams that i must move to UK to find some roman relics, i know the roman empire was BIG, but i have a thing for UK its more charming i think :tongue3:
Very nice finds  The land that you did tip me on i might be able to search this year, but for now i must search more on that big hill, tomorrow i hope i strike big
Take care!

Get in those fields & look for Lead pieces  This is the best indicator of a site (as well as iron nails).
Hi mate .... congrats for the Roman Mount! :icon_thumleft:
lead and the iron nails, I found a thousands ... but be careful because even though many lead are useless but some are round and inscriciones or drawings and a few nails are made of bronze .... these two types of findings are very collectible , I also to save the nails .... you never know who might have belonged. ::)

Thx for the info, but i must ask, is it just in farmlands/ big open land that hiddens this? As you say, iron nails and led in fields are not that ordinary, but how is it in woods and so on? I know that the town i live in is small town, but people have found stoneage axe and so on, so people have been here a longtime, is it not known that heights always have driven mankind to it? From now i will not throw the nails without take a look at them! Sorry Cru for writing so much, but i know that you and Hispan is good at this! :notworthy:

Generally, I don't do very well in woods, however some woods close to Roman Sites & area's that the replanting of trees have keep the objects close to the surface are very good. Because the items have less chemicals & less damage from the ploughs. You just have to try it & see. Basically No Lead=No Site. Lead is expected on any age site, so without it, you are less likely to get the other good finds.
Yes, you are right the higher ground is generally better. You have to look at the land as it used to be hundreds of years ago. The water was probably higher, the rivers have probably moved, but anywhere that springs are, is worth trying.
Its not always on the highest ground but on the Plato's just out of the wind. Look for any lumps & bumps that do not look natural, think about where the soil is best to farm etc...
The area, I spotted for you, is unusual but may have nothing. Its not the usual Roman/Celtic looking cropmark, it maybe much later. The most important thing is to find ploughed land that has always been ploughed (ie. for hundreds of years, this maybe just a field & always a field, but its where man has dumped their rubbish for years) :icon_thumright:
