5 silver day....one's a thimble
I finally got a chance to go hunting today and did pretty well by my standards. I had permission to hunt a yard of a home built in the '20s, so I was expecting to find lots of wheats, maybe an indian or two, and some silvers. In that yard, I mostly found clad, a lipstick tube, and one 1957d wheat, which I gave to the homeowner. I left there to head for greener pastures, and when I turned the corner, there was a small bulldozed lot on a little dirt road. I pulled in and saw glass, so I hopped out and turned on the machine. Wow, what a ton of signals. I couldn't make sense of my machine, so I took the 12.5" sunray coil off and put the stock 8" coil on.
Still, this place is severely trashy...full of nails and other junk. I had to go at a snail's pace and carefully investigate every blip on the higher end of the ID meter to see if it was falsing on junk or there was good metal there. I struggled, trying to get in the zone so I could sort through this trash. Finally, I got the hang of it and found a silver thimble! I haven't found a silver one until now. It was getting dark, but I dug a good sounding beep and felt a larger coin in my hand. I could tell by the waxy feeling surface it was silver. That was the first '42 quarter. I rechecked the hole and popped out the '47 dime. Just inches away from the hole I got another good tone and popped out another '42 quarter! A little while later I hit a wheat and the '40 merc in the same hole.
In the meantime, I was digging bits of lead, copper, aluminum, and a scattered wheat or two. I also dug a part of a lock that says US, a medal with a key and a tree that says "Arms secure peace", and a small buckle looking thing. Lots of makeup compacts too, and a 1951 dog license. I only covered a small part of the lot, so maybe I can get a few more goodies from here. They aren't that old, but silver is always good...especially quarters!
Thanks for looking, and God bless!
