6 more hrs @ 1860's house, still producing, and a first to check off the list

Well, for about the last month I've been pounding this one site with great success. After finding another Merc and 2 V-nickels in my second pass of an area of the yard the finds are starting to slow down in the yard area. I decided to hit the woods a bit and am glad I did. I pulled out a bunch of bullets including an intact one. Also a pretty cool BPOE medal from 1912. So, the 7 wheaties added to the 26 I already found gives me a total of 33 wheaties and 4 mercs and a silver ring. Not the best silver to wheatie ratio, but the cool relics more than make up for it. Surprising with the date range of the relics I've found that I have yet to find some barbers, or earlier coins. Here are links to the first two posts if you're interested:

I'm hoping some people could chime in on the type/name, and date range of manufacture of the bullets, specifically the intact one. There are no markings stamped on it at all, so I'm assuming they are pretty old. What type of gun was it used in?

Also, does anyone have any information on the 2 piece button? It looks like it has the letters A S, or S A on it, with stars around the border. The back is iron, so I think it is probably later 1800's. Does anyone know what the letters stand for? Could this perhaps be a military button?

Lastly, call me simple, but I finally found an item I've always wanted at this site, the clay marble! I don't know, I see people post finding them from time to time and I always tell myself I hope I find one someday. You can even see the remains of 3 blue stripes on it. A pretty simple, but very cool item to me, and something I've always wanted to find! Does anyone know about how old it is, how they made them etc?

Nice finds. I found one of those city fare tokens last year, looks just like yours, I'm sure they were made for many cities and were used for many things. Mine says ''St. Louis Railway Co. Good for one city fare'' There might be a date on one side of the bottom of the U, but is very small and may be worn off on yours!!

The unfired round of ammo ,without measureing it, looks to be an old .32 cal. or so rimfire.

Interesting finds and a great site to hunt! Those clay marbles really are cool finds, I always get excited when I find one even though I have at least 30 and found an extra large boulder last spring. They are pre 1850 and before the industrial revolution. HH, Mike

Well it's definately a lot bigger than a .32 cal round. If you look at the first picture you can see it in comparison to some dimes and penny's. .32 is not much bigger than a .22, I'm very familiar with .22 .32 9mm 45cal and this is a lot bigger, lot bigger than the 44 magnums too.

Just wondering back then what the sizes were? Could this be one of those "buffalo bullets"?

Hi Paul, thanks for the info, this is Matt from YTC, I think you were a member in 2008...

Another slight update on the cartridge. I believe it may be closer to a 56-56 Spencer round, perhaps Cavalry. However, the case is longer than the pictures I've seen of these. So perhaps another variation. But the round itself is definately that size.

Your finds are great.
I noticed that you have an elks metal from 1912, Portland Oregon I assume. If not, disregard this message.
It looks as if the top piece is missing. I have a piece that says B.P.O. E. Portland 1912. I does not say Main or Orgeon. If you are interested and are willing to take the time to see if your local Elks club has a copy of this annual meeting medal the piece may be the one you are missing. Just a thought.

Well I'm in Connecticut, so I at first assumed Maine rather than Oregon. But I googled 1912 grand reunion portland and the first hit is this: http://www.cafeunknown.com/2010/06/summer-extravaganza-1912-rose-festival.html So it seems that this is from Oregon. Pretty cool.

I think you are correct that where the broken loop up at the top, there was probably a rectagular pin attached with more information. I'll have to see where the closest elks club is by me.

It turns out the button did not have the letters S A or A S, but rather they turned out to be S V, standing for Sons of Civil War Veteran. Below is a pic from an ebay listing the ID'er provided. Pretty cool, dates to after the Civil War I suppose.
