A pic of the back and a side view showing the thickness, also knowing what the metal is would be helpful. To me, it looks to be horse-related, depending on how thick it is and what's on the back, it may also be a ladies sash buckle.

LOL, "big as your hand", is that small hand, large hand?
Mine is 1.25 inches found in creek in Missouri.
