7/28/10 Vnickel#13; 1865 IH; a strange eagle's claw whatzit; military button

Hi all,
got out for a few hours today, Wed 7/28 prior to the rain. I found a very strange thing indeed, any ID's welcomed. First I found an 1865 IH, my second '65 on the year. Then I found the strange What's it eagle claw -- came up like a nickel 12-13/14 on Etrac. Much later I found .... V #13 (1906), what a surprise... The day closed out with a toasted cuff link (next to eagle's claw.)

Also included is a button I found back in May but did not post. I am assuming it is military. The place I found it saw activity between 1890 and 1910. Any ideas/info about the button and/or eagle claw?

The claw looks like something the size of a dowel rod could be inserted into it. Too small for cane, I think.

I don't dare clean this button, I am afraid all detail will come off.

Last ILL hunt for me till Aug 7th. Off to PA tomorrow for a wedding. Then straight to Madison WI for a week of work meetings. Will bring detector with me. Not sure about hunting though.

Happy hunting all

Pretty sure from the what is it forum that this is indeed a walking cane head. I think it is silver plate ... there is an ugly gray porous material underneath the shiny....

Nice finds Jon, don't have a clue on the claw.

Nice stuff Jon!

Not sure on that pommel. Cane, maybe some Field Marshall's Baton, maybe even a fancy evil riding crop?!? Pretty sure it's cool though!

The button looks fairly genericfrom what I see of it, GS from the period you consider up through early WWII era? Any backmarks?

Yeah you're getting the good coin still!

Hope you get the chance and time to swing the coil in Pa.! Those folk there really score on goodies!

Nice stuff Jon

I really like that "claw" thing. . . topper to a cane or ladies' parasol maybe?
As for the military button. . . possibly 1902-1918 (WWI)

I wonder if any letter openers had claw handles like that?
Or what about the handle for a lead seal for sealing envelopes and important papers?

Watch out for the sink holes in Wisconsin.
They have been pumping crude cheese out of the ground for so long now that it's finally caving in everywhere.

Not that the '65 was a white/fatty, but pre 1864's will ring up some where between 12-21 and 12-25 on your new E-trac, which is a real pain cuz that's exactly where pull tabs fall. When I am in spots that potentially could have a fatty, I will dig, but when I get to my 4th or 5th pull tab, I usually give up on that signal. I think that's where a $2.5 gold piece would fall too.
