This was printed in an Indiana newspaper, quoting an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer about two brothers in Northern Pennsylvania.
They decided to bury $75,000 in half dollars. Using an on-line calculator, that's about 3,720 lbs.

Rust was either Transferred from a Metal Container that Rusted, Or counterfeit.
Which the Bank would have Investigated before Buying. so my guess they buried it in tin or steel buckets and the coins that touched the sides got the transfer leaching
