Thats probably true, so let's keep pumping money into NASA's waist projects. $100,000,000 is a lot of money, no matter what we've spent in other areas.

Since you missed the joke, it is WASTE. Not to mention, there are many other government agencies that are wasting far more of your money. KBR is robbing the American taxpayer blind, while not providing the paid for services to troops in Iraq. I know this first hand.

DO you object to NASA because it is a science based organization? I am seriously confused about why people want to jump on NASA, when the banks, failing auto companies, and mortgage burglars and cheats are getting hundreds of times more money, without having to produce anything resembling results. NASA at least does what they can with the money they have.

The point is, NASA does not waste money, it uses what little money it gets for projects that are within its charter and direction. It produces results, and many of those research products have practical applications right here on Earth in medicine, agriculture, and electronics. None of those are wastes in my book, but then again, I value scientific enquiry over bailing out useless banks and dinosaur automobile manufacturers any day. Personally I would like to see the USA beat Russia to building the first Lunar Base.

Complaining about science...seems sort of well...dumb to me. Complain about military waste, social services waste, foreign aid waste, political waste, pork projects with zero scientific merit...but complaining about NASA conducting experiments toward humanity finally leaving terra firma and venturing into the universe is petty and dumb. If we are to create a base or settlement on the Moon we will need water. This experiment helps determine whether water is there or not. Unless building a multi billion dollar probe and sending it up in a multi billion dollar rocket is a better idea. I mean this was sending something TO THE MOON, how much should that cost?
Science is money well spent.

Is the water if found on the moon drinkable or is it "heavy water" used by the nazi's and others for nuclear bomb developement.
Also useful in nuke experiments is helium 3 which is more abundant on the moon.
I agree with Jeff that this was a military funded operation as the start of exploration for bomb making material
on the moon.
There is more to this experiment than meets the eye and it certainly wasn't a dud.

Even though money could go to things like Cancer and other diseases, I think them blowing up the moon was really cool. I am still trying to find the 1.5 hour video coverage online because you know someone released it on the net. Even if it is a 79 million dollar dud, it was still worth a try. Read the article in full and be amazed what he3 can do and its relative abundance on the moon.

Re. heavy water; it's thought that ALL the water on the moon is "heavy water".

This should now tell us that the moon already has a super rich source of energy waiting to be exploited and further exploration is
justified.
