Hi,

I found this detecting at a 1850s - present homesite in Kentucky. I about fell over when this came out of the plug! Anyway, using the dime pictured next to it (18mm dia) I determined this was from an 8 Reale as there was just a tiny bit of the point showing when the outside edges were lined up, meaning the original coin was to big for a 4 Reale. Anyway, I was wondering what the value is. I'm not trying to sell it, but just for my own knowledge. No mint mark or year on my piece, but it is a Carolus IIII so minted between 1790 and 1808. Thanks for your thoughts!

Congrats on Silver find, it is so fun finding cut coins, i found a half 8 reale same carolus iiii... very nice find

Sweet find....cut pieces are special finds....congrats !!

Nice find. Maybe there was an earlier house site there?
I have found several cut pieces from 8 reales - one cut into 4 reales, five cut into 1 real, and one cut into a half real. But I have never found one cut into 2 reales. As far as value, I don't think they go up for sale very often. You might be able to do a google search and find one that has sold or is up for sale.

I coughed up about $300 for one of those not 6 months age... 2 bits of an 8... CLASSIC!

Thanks for the answer!!! Where did you even find one for sale? I looked online, but couldn't find any.
