This was found in Grace mound in the late 1800's in Issaquena county Ms.. I have seen drawings of it but this is the 1st photo of it I have gotten hold of. grace mound tablet.webp It is a plate on the other side used to grind up pigments. It's made of a fine sandstone.

Wow! How big is it?

sure does have a meso-american look also

perhaps, but i just think there is a whole pre contact connection between a lot of native groups that can never be fully understood due to the loss of peoples and cultures. the whole Mississippi area was a hugely connected and burgeoning culture. those big river systems were the interstates of their day and meso-american societies were pretty sophisticated in terms of trade and organization. who really knows...fascinating subject for me.

Wonderful piece! The Rattle Snake motif was very popular in the SE cultures, makes one wonder if they were snake handlers and worshiped it as a divinity or as a symbol of life and death with the shedding of the skin. Wish I knew..........

I go along with you on that thought. I believe the art form was taught all long the Gulf of Mexico and up the larger river systems.

that is amazing.
