I wanted to get out today before the big deep freeze comes. It was just cold today with a high of 27. The next couple days are going to be very cold. So, I dressed as warmly as possible. Thermal longies underneath, woolen shirt and neck gaiter, old ski jacket and ski gloves, warm insulated boots.

I want to thank member rogues71 for suggesting that I take a machette with me into the woods. It really came in handy today in slicing through the partially frozen groung as well as choping down those thorn bushes. I couldn't hunt the bike trails today because the bare dirt in the trails was frozen pretty solid. So, I concentrated on partially cleared areas off the trails that looked like they might have been camped in years ago. I had another very good day. The finds covered a period from the Civil War to the Vietnam era.

Here's how they looked when I got them home. Some of the items still had dirt attached and one big silver piece was imbedded in a clump of dirt that was still thawing out.

The dirt just rinsed off the silver pieces. No cleaning with soap, cleanser or baking soda, etc. was needed. I dropped the "War Nickel" into the rock tumbler with the other things and it came out bright and shiney.

Here's the best find, an 1877 Seated Half:

The half that was imbedded in frozen dirt turned out to be a 1944-D Walker:
