Detector(s) used
XP DEUS, Nautilus DMC IIB
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Yesterday was one of those days you dream about being a relic hunter. I literally found almost 50 targets in a small 15 by 15 square foot area. Every where I swept my detector I got a signal! What I couldn't believe was I had been there many times before.... BUT these relics were DEEP. My Nautilus may have missed them but the XP DEUS didn't !!! Every Gardner, 22 of them, and every musket ball, was 12 inches or deeper. And the Mississippi coat button was just as deep..... entangled in a web of roots, right at the base of a massive elm tree. I am honestly amazed that I didn't hit it with my shovel getting it out. This area is void of any trash, except for the always present shot gun shell and the occasional small caliber modern bullet, .... so once I realized what I had just walked into, I started to hunt very slow and llistened for the slightest increase in the DEUS's tones. I walked into this area late in the hunt so I was only there for about an hour. I know there are more relics there! Once I get a chance to get back I will grid the area off and walk a pattern hitting the site in all directions. Hopefully another button or two is hiding in there or possibly a plate! Buttons with stars on them always get me going! I could hardly sleep last night............. I can't wait to get back!!! This Mississippi Infantry coat button has 100 percent gold gilt! The green areas have gold underneath but I decided to leave it like it is. The back is silver plated and reads Hyde and Goodrich NO. Now this button whistles DIXIE!!!!! HH Devonrex

If that's a cartridge box finial maybe there is a box plate there somewhere, CONGRATS!!! d2

Congrats on a great button.

Love my Deus, that is an incredible find, congratulations!

Wow... that button is just spectacular. And all that lead.

Congrats sir.

Congratulations - Wow! :headbang::hello2:

Wow, now that site is amazing! Best Mississippi I I've seen pop from the ground. I really really need to get me a Deus now, cause I have a lot of places I could try one of those out at and makes me wonder even more what I've missed!

Fantastic button and bullets!

Steve

Fantastic button John-and there's no telling what you might find there. Go get 'em!

Awesome button. That much gilt remaining on that old of button is super hard to find. Congrats! [emoji2]
Thanks Bill, Yes in my 35 years of doing this this is the best example of this button I've ever found!!! 40 years ago, a few in this condition were found near this site, but today this is totally unheard of considering these buttons have been in the ground now 155 years. It ranks in the top 10 Confederate buttons I have found. Hopefully this campsite will give up a few more of these if I can get the time to dig. I'm looking forward to your book coming out. I don't know if you know but I am considering writing a book as well. Please let me know when it does as I would like an autographed edition. I know your digging season is getting ready to begin! Let the colonial silver windstreak begin!!! HH John

Yes sir! You have a good eye! That is indeed a lead Confederate cartridge box finial. Hopefully the plate was lost as well and is deep like everything else I found because if it was near the surface it was found long ago! Devonrex
