Hey all,

I found the forum a few days ago and I'm really wishing I lived closer to the States. After some reading I've come to the realization that CRH in Canada seems like wild goose chase at best. However, I'm not totally deterred.

If there are any other Canadians that might be able to comment, is there much success in the hunt? I'm also curious about protocol at the banks. Can you just ask the tellers for customer rolled coins? If I order a box, do they generally come machine rolled?

Are there any other places to look for coins? Would places like Money Mart or Currency Exchanges have rolls? Other than putting the APB out to my family to let me buy their unrolled change jars off them does anyone else have any ideas?

Looking forward to the hunt.

Mike

Welcome aboard, eh! I bet you can find some good stuff up there, since all yours have silver edges - in theory, the silver ones wouldn't stand out so obviously. I love your country's silver coins - they are beautiful! I started a collection recently of foreign silver and love Canadian dollars and quarters especially.

Just head into to your local bank and see what you can get. Good luck friend.

I'm new to the hunt myself and am concentrating now on pennies because as of (I think) Feb 4th the banks will be shipping them all back to be taken out of circulation. Just picked up $100 worth and will probably buy about $5000 (200 boxes) worth if I can find them. I'm pretty much going to buy everything that every bank here has for pennies. All the other denominations will be waiting for us after the government's cull of the cent. I'm not sure but I don't believe the banks are allowed even to issue them after a certain date in next month. I figure get while the getting is good then I'll have to get my friends from the US to bring me boxes of US pennies (wheat cents here I come) after that I guess. I'm going to get them to bring me US halves as well. The finds by the folks living in the US on this forum got me drooling for sure.

I would be buying too if the shipping price was not too high...

Don't go overboard with the halves just yet. Many, many people here get skunked repeatedly before finding anything significant. Some get lucky, but very few get lucky consistently. The reason most of us do this is for the enjoyment, and because it's free. When you start paying fees or going to great lengths to get coins, you may get burned out very quickly after a few skunks...

I think you could do all your CRHing for silver with a magnet in Canada. Wouldn't need to worry about edges.

1979 Canadian nick is a keeper. Pure nickel.

I'm thinking it will be low risk for me as I don't think I'll be paying any fees (my buddies have bank accounts) and I don't have a single half in my coin collection. Unlike a lot of people on this forum I'm doing CRH for a hobby and am not in it just for the silver. I go through boxes of coins looking for error coins and anything else cool I can find. To me taking coins out of a roll just to see if there is a silver rim or not doesn't constitute much of a hobby in my eyes. FormerTeller I in no way am speaking directly at you, I'm just making a general statement of my own opinion and thanks for the tips. Even If I found a Proof in a box of halves I would be on cloud nine. It would take me day's of CRH just get enough silver or anything good to cover an hour of overtime at my job. Don't worry my US neighbors I'm not going to get all of your silver.

I live in michigan and I have been putting aside any canadian coinage I can find. Right now I am putting all my nickels into rolls and the cents I definitely am keeping. I had 80 dollars worth of canadian pennies 15 years ago. Had a freind take them to canada and she had a brain moment, leaving them at a reststop. ehhh, I was so mad. Now I am kicking myself that I let them go at all. Also now any canadian pennies I find I keep. I do have one roll of BU 1968 canadian pennies. If there are any particular dates, let me know what you are looking for. I also have some 1944-47 "V" nickels. They don't look the best but they are still really cool.

Check ya later,
Garoulady

No offense taken. As you saw, I said

Yup 100%, I'm glad. I love my new hobby and look at it as spending $$$ on $$$ is not wasted $$$. The free thing... not for me LMFAO. I like the Olympic CAN quarters too much to put them back. Each box cost's me at least $20. I just go by this and hope for the best.

If only the US would make coins magnetic..

Thanks for the link BackBacon. I wanted to check out the dates for my canadian quarters. And I am totally drooling over the 2011 themes. I love how the canadian mint puts out a different theme every year. Something new and cool every year. Eventually they make their way down to me. cheaper than buying them.

Sincerely,
Garoulady

Thanks for the link but I don't see any quarter sets or how I can order from the mint?

There is a huge problem with magnet searching. If you have 3 coins, 2 magnetic, and one non-magnetic in the middle, the force of the other two can pick the non-magnetic one up. Also, if two coins are stuck, they will stick, even if one is silver. All of these can be combated by having all the coins laid out, and then individually putting them up to the magnet.
