Morning all, I was wondering when you guys go out do you have a small shovel or do you just use a small digger? I received the Gator digger with my Ace 250 from KellyCo, but I refuse to pay 40 bucks on a small shovel from them, imo that's just ridiculous. Any ideas on where I can buy a small shovel cheap?

Also, does everyone use kneed pads? Thanks for your time!

Get a Lesche hand digger. You buy it once. $40 may SEEM like a lot, but it is cheap compared to buying a new digger every few weeks, or having it break at the worst possible time far out in the field. Don't make the newbie mistake of trying to go cheap. Buy the best the first time and be done with it.

I mostly use a Lesche digging tool, but carry a short handled shovel for the deeper hits. Though would never use a shovel on well manicured lawns.

I bought a small 24 inch sqare head shovel from Harbor Freight for $10. I like it for most everything I dig, just don't try to use it as a pry bar!!!

Ive been a carpenter for almost 40 yrs and the one thing I learned a long time ago.... dont waste money on cheap tools. Your digger is an important tool. You dont have to buy the best, but dont buy the cheapest.
Harbor Freight may have something suitable, but I have never found anything there.

Lowes has a turf cutter for about $12. I've used one for months and it works great. Its really strong too.

Try an Army-Navy Surplus store and look for a trench shovel...blade can be modified if needed...

Serrated blade can cut thru roots...

Great leverage and can be used as a pick too...

Can get a canvas holster which can be afixed to your belt...

I use a square masonry trowel I bought from Lowes for $6 and it works better than the Lesch $40 digger I have. I do not use new pads because the straps make the back of my legs sore. My pants get dirty and sometimes damp but I prefer that over knee pads.

Oh yea...I use knee pads! I'm a carpet installer from way back. My knees are shot!! I suggest knee pads with a plastic cup. You can kneel on gravel and sticks. Look for a set hooks on as opposed to velcro straps. They are less comfortable, but stay in place better.

A lot will depend on where you plan to dig. In a park or school, I want to be as inconspicuous as possible so I use only a small trowel type digger. Out in the woods or open field, sure, use a shovel if you think it's easier. I still use the trowel because I don't want to carry around a big heavy tool on my belt. Knee pads, the same way, in a rocky or harsh ground area, absolutely....at the beach, no.
