Hi all,
In Massachusetts, local forest I found these two items... first, I was told resembled a Colonial breeches buckle, which has raised flowers and squares alternating around it, with a fine rope border on the inside edge. The second someone said looked like an etched copper brass button, maybe Colonial...it's very thin, I thought I only found the back of a button. The little eye isn't even centered. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

In addition, the lead balls I was told were musket balls. One is just under 3/4", or .69 and the other is a bit smaller.

Nice finds, Russ. I think you found the entire button. It appears to be a tombac button, very common in colonial times. Not all had a design on the front, the vast majority were plain. There's got to be more good stuff hiding under that forest floor!

Nice colonial digs!

A little reading/research will tell you that colonial American button makers struggled with poor quality in the early days.

Is that a round ball with a ramrod impression on it? Pretty cool...

Thanks for the help, and I have no idea what is on that ball.. I assumed it was the area where it was clipped after it came out of the mold. The other ball is almost perfectly smooth.

Nice finds. Congrats. I’d stick around a little longer and see what else is hidden in the ground. Welcome to tnet from Niagara Falls.
