Got out in the woods today and found a few pennies a dime a couple of old shotgun shell heads and a round piece of lead that may be a musket ball. Also a piece of aluminum. I see lots of photos of coins posted here that look pristine after they were cleaned up. A couple of these coins are barely identifiable. There's a dime, a wheatie and a newer Lincoln cent, the other penny is beyond recognition. They are so badly corroded I can't even read the dates. Very disappointing. I soaked these in vinegar and baking soda which cleaned them up some but they are just too far gone. These were found very close to the ocean, would the salty air do this? Thanks for any answers.

I can honestly tell you that the majority of the oldest coins are worn, dateless, and sometimes hardly identifiable. If they are in good shape identifiable and look like they did when lost they are the exception and are the prizes if detecting; all I can say is keep at it and the better ones will come

Some ground conditions are more harsh on coins.
