A few Garrett observations

At one time or another, I've owned just about every Garrett model ever made. It seems like every time I get the itch to replow the parks, I buy another one. The last time I did this, I ended up with a GTI-2500. At the time, I assessed it as one of the best I've owned, but it did have a major drawback—it was heavy! This time around, I bought an Apex, and there is no doubt it is a head above the 2500 in every aspect. Best of all it is light weight! Never one to stand still, I bought a Vortex VX-9. Oops! This one is heavy too, but its discrimination ability is top notch. After using it a few days, I bought a Viper coil for it. The difference in coil weight isn't all that much, but it certainly made swinging much more enjoyable. The smaller coil width also improves pin pointing. I'm planning on switching between the two for a while to further assess their merits. Nonetheless, I'm now leaning towards the Vortex as it has all but eliminated digging up pull tabs.

Sidelight. I'm old enough that sometimes what few filters I still possess don't get used! This past Friday I watched a 30s something father teach his kids that littering is okay. I didn't except him to react the way he did to my tongue-lashing, but he apologized and told his son I was right. Gives me some hope for the latest generation.
