I was poking around two old ash dumps after work for a couple of hours this week . the first one I had hunted before the second one is a new one I found in the woods behind a baseball field . I found the Iron and another ax head which was not in my bag when I got back to the truck :icon_scratch:. and the lamp base at the large ash dump site that I have pulled a lot of relics from . I found the long chisel bar the hammer head and the ax head in the pic in the ashes behind the ball field ! Also found the play money and the marble in the same hole on the edge of the ballfield as well as the compact. . The last pic is MRS. Reilc holding up the chisel bar ? The head is mushroomed quite a bit . I wonder what they were chiseling ?? Thanks for looking . MaineRelic

Good to hear from you :hello:
I got an old iron like that with the plug, but no handle..
the iron bar might have been used for quarrying :icon_scratch:
like that lamp base, is it plated iron or brass ?
Jeez, I hate coming home and saying 'Hmm, what happened to that other thing I found',
not as dramatic as shaking the mud off a coin and having it fly out of your fingers,
but still an experience we could do without :tongue3:

M-R,

I think the round item below the axe head in the one pic might be an iron reins guide. They were usually brass, like these, but I imagine they could be iron too.

I do a little poking around and sifting in a circa 1915 ash pile that I dug out for bottles many years ago. I still find clay marbles, tokens, etc. I now check all the compacts I find there in case they have a coin stashed in them. I also bring home all the brass and copper scraps which go into my 5 gallon buckets, which I will take to the scrap yard.

Here are some brass reins guides in the top row of this pic (for those that may not know what they are)

Thanks for the rein guide info Steve . I thought it was too small for an oar lock ! Of course I scrap the brass and copper as well Copper is well over $ 3.00 lb :o

Thanks Herbie ! My tennis or swingers elbow is keeping me from conventional swinging at the moment. I can still do a little trash hunting and digging ! M.R.

Very interesting finds MaineRelic! :o

I like the compact and the marble! :icon_thumright:

MR, Hope that elbow improves,, I know that excruciating pain :P
I was thinking about setting up a sifting box frame to use at some ash dumps I know of. I want a freestanding foldup unit, so that shaking it doesn't tear up the elbow.
Got some spare 2X4s and wire mesh? this would definitely help in pulling goodies from the ashes.
Steve, thanks for posting those Rein guides, I got a couple, they are in my unidentified keepers box. Great to have that ID!!
Best to everyone, Herbie.

That's a nice variety of finds.
