It could be a variety of pipestone, but is most likely some type of limestone. The carving doesn't look particularly ancient, what's the story behind it?

i don't really know much of the story other than he thinks it is native. i'm rather skeptical. would like to see it in person and see the bottom.

You are correct, a bottom view would probably tell you a lot about how it was made.

it looks a lot like it was made with files, grinders and dremel tools...especially the tip and the mouth
