This book by Daniel Barbarisi really goes the extra mile in terms of research, time and passion for it's subject. The author went on several hunts with a buddy and over the years manages to interview; several searchers, Forrest Fenn, and the finder Jack Steuf. He also gets access to the treasure box and contents through Steuf's lawyers in Santa Fe.
Even though I was never more than an early "armchair searcher" on this one I found it a captivating read and devoured it. Besides the obvious subjects he delves into the chat room BS, lawsuits, sexual harassment allegations against Fenn by women searchers, the crazy ideas and conspiracies along with the five confirmed deaths related to the hunt.
It was almost exactly a year ago that the hunt officially ended with Jack Steuf as the finder. This created yet more controversy and drama about the hunt's legitimacy and Fenn's personal character. As for the legitimacy of the hunt this book clears up a lot of lingering questions and leaves the verdict about Fenn's legacy up to the reader. (he died three months after the hunt ended at age 90)
In a national phenomenon that generated a lot of white noise for 10 solid years on this site and just about everywhere else this book is an exciting final and definitive chapter to it all....

Unbelievably this psychopath got away with killing four really stupid people scott free.

He didn't kill anyone. In fact he stated a old man (himself) hid the treasure and no risk would be needed to be taken to find it.

Do i have problems with the little geeky boy from out East who solved it when no one else could after ten years of searching and just before Fenn's imminent death and the pressure mounting from Law Enforcement to call it off (two had just died shortly before it was "found"). Yeah, that's some circumstantial evidence that can't be completely ignored.

I do know that some were caught digging in National Parks and in Graveyards and gave the excuse they were looking for Fenns Treasure, but that was just a lie and a cover story, which made Fenn look bad through no fault of his own.

As far as those who died, that's a risk they voluntarily took when they decided to seek the treasure, just as you and I take every day calculated risks to pursue our passions, be it motorcycling, kayaking, motorsports, back country hiking, metal detecting, diving, rock climbing etc.

Now, if it was all a hoax, one could make an argument that Fenn may have some liability, but to date, other than speculation and suspicious circumstance, no concrete evidence has been uncovered that shows it's a hoax.
