A SILVER INDIAN HEAD??? and Seated Handful!

Hello All!

Came back from vacation and in such a hurry to hunt that I forgot my video camera :BangHead: so you'll have to make do with photos!

I wanted to post a photo first off of an item which got an ID a while back and I'm thrilled to dig--it's a hammer plate from a boxlock pistol!

So I went out and dug in the cane fields and turned up a nice Eagle "I" vest button. Also got a little pocket watch winder and a nice little flat button. (And of course, the ever-present V nickel)

Picked a nice high tone out of the iron and saw a flash of silver in the hole!

It was an 1858 Seated Dime!

Not long after that, near my parking spot in the turn row, I flipped out Seated #2, an 1848-O Seated Half Dime!

Then it started to get hot. Like 95 degrees hot! So I started to take breaks and sweat my @$$ off. The I got a clear, high tone again and saw Seated #3 in the clod! 1842-O Dime!

After that I was just amazed! What a handful!!! :hello2:

Last of all I stumbled on a Louisiana Knights Templar badge! Had never seen one of these before so I had no idea what I was looking at when dug:

But I will update this thread with a photo of it toothpicked off--and I DID manage to find a photo of a non-dug one online! It is the "jewel" from the 31st Triennial encampment of 1910. Perhaps I can find the Louisiana shaped piece and the sword in that field too!

So after lunch I went to site #2, just out of curiosity to see if there was anything to be found there. I dug several Maynard carbine casings (the butt end of them, which you can always identify by the solder marks and the tiny hole in the center):

Shangalang joined me, and I won't tell ya what he found but he needs to post it! Here's a photo though ;)

After that excitement we kept digging and I got a piece of a cast brass "oak leaves" item that I've dug a piece of before on the site (help is appreciated!)

Also got a "newer" tin soldier, and what I believe is a spur that fit into the boot heel. Again, I'd appreciate an ID, as this there isn't anything like this in my two spur books:

Shangalang dug a STUNNING 1888 Seated Dime which I hope he posts!

He also got what we *think* may be a little piece of GOLD:

Then I got a nice high tone, and dug carefully, expecting another silver dime. It was a silver Indian Head. :icon_scratch: :icon_thumright:

I have no idea what this is off of. (Help appreciated here as well!) But I sure do like it!

(marked "Sterling" on the reverse)

So I was SUPER pleased with the finds from these two sites!

Thats a fantastic hunt Will! Had you ever that much silver in the heat? My hats off to you! :occasion14:

Awesome hunt. Congratulations

Congrats on some seriously awesome finds! That 42-O is in great shape...

The maynard cartridge is indeed very odd. When I found a Maynard at a yard sale I was puzzled by the large gap when the breech was closed. When it was identified on this site and then later found a cartridge for it I realized that the gap is for the large thick rim at the base of the round. Very cool digging those. If they are reusable they fetch 30 dollars a piece!

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

What an awesome hunt! I love the KT jewel. I always enjoy finding Masonic memorabilia

Golly, that was some productive hunt.

Congrats on some seriously good finds!!! Handful of seated! Wow! That silver indian is cool too.

Sweet boy that addiction is full on there's no cure. Great finds it would take me years to find all that. Well done

Don't know how you can hunt in a sauna - but my hat is off to you for doing it and it is nice to see that you were rewarded for your efforts in those conditions while some of us (cough, cough...) were searching coin rolls in the A/C with no sweat in our eyes.

Very nice artifacts to go with those seated dimes. I've not heard of anyone finding 3 in one day. I once found two in a day about three decades ago (no truth to the rumor they were still circulating when I was doing most of my hunting...)

The New Orleans mintmarks show a time when coins did not circulate as far as they do today. It was a time when commerce and travel was much more local and many people never traveled more than a few miles from home. And the coins they lost had been put into circulation locally.

I'm speechless, green with envy, I have no words, I'm jealous, flabbergasted and amazed, no I have no words.

WOW! What a day and I'm happy for you. These days I'm tickled to find just a wheat cent... Good going.

heck of a hunt! wow!

Were you the inspiration for that insurance TV ad I hear...”Liberty, Liberty, LIBerty.....”?[emoji6] What a super day you had! Congratulations!
