It looks like one of the 'ear handles that would have gone on the side of a vase/urn or either a broken part to a candelabra or hanging brass lamp. There were many items made during the turn of the century that used those 'swirls.'

Hello Pete, can you tell what it is made of- looks brass? Is it heavy? - for it's size? The bottom of the looped area seems to show wear on the inside of the loop. It looks cast rather than forged. The scroll work would make it "fancy" and therefore not something that a common person would have owned. How deep was it and what type of an area were you hunting. Sorry for all the questions but this is an unusual item and sometimes putting it into context helps in solving the mystery. HH
