Got rained out yesterday at a pretty good site, a 90 year old park I was trying to find some deeper, older targets with my newest accessory a 5.75 concentric sniper coil for my Vaquero.
I love sniper coils, I love my Vaq, seems like a match made in heaven to me.
After the rain I headed over to my go-to site which is a large Jr. college that is only about a mile from my home.
Wasn't expecting much, but it was cool and overcast and the soil was moist and just perfect for digging and I didn't want to waste that since it appears it will be heating up again soon.
Usually I spend most of my time hunting several long grass islands dividing up parking lots at this site, and there is a large basketball court I have hunted several times and a few other areas, too, but I come here to mostly kill time when I don't want to drive far.
Next to this basketball court is a very large area that is flat but doesn't seem to get much use.
It is not marked off for sports, plenty of sports fields around here for all of that, and I am not sure any students would use this area much except to maybe sit and gather once in a while, if that.
I have been over this area before just wandering around and never found many signals of any kind, even trash, but before I took the new coil over to those grassy islands I thought I would just wander around this huge area a little and see if lady luck happens to be around.
I have been lucky like this before, finding gold rings in huge areas with small coils, but that is very rare.
Yesterday I had another of those rare occurrences.
I just happened to walk over a spot and got a solid signal as I dialed down my disk knob after turning past the fade out point...something I always do and the way I hunt with both my Tesoros.
When I dial down if I get clicks or scratches or any noise at all I have learned this is usually trash.
Targets that have no noise and just "come in" I always dig because even though some trash targets do this most every good target I have ever dug acted this way too.
This signal met my requirements, it came in clean and clear just below nickel at the high foil area so I dug it.
Glad I did.
I am on a quest to dig 12 pieces of gold this year in any form, one for each month in the year which is a task not very easy to do for those of us that hunt in the dirt.
This ring is small but it is 14k and it counts...all 1.8 grams of it.
You can't count on luck in this hobby, but when it does appear ya gotta love it and be thankful...and I am.
I just happen to have an extra accessory I mount on my detectors to draw some of this luck closer just in case it is hanging around the area.
So far it seems to be working.
6 gold rings and one gold bracelet so far this year, that makes 7 and we are just starting month # 8.
I got a shot at my 12 gold targets goal so lets hope the train keeps a rolling.
