I had about 1 hour to hunt this morning and I decided to hunt a area near the Courthouse in Pulaski (Va). Right off I found a 1920 wheat penny. After another 20 minutes, and nothing, I decided to hunt the dirt area between the courthouse and some bushes. I had searched only about four feet when I got a strong 44 target at about 10". I recovered a badge shaped medal. The words Jamestown, Tri-centennial, 1907 Exposition and Landed Capt Smith 1607. It appears to be made of brass but I'm not sure.
In 1607 Capt John Smith sailed up the James River and established a settlement that was named Jamestown. In 1907 a Tri-Centennial was held to celebrate the 300th anniversary of that settlement.
All the county's of Virginia were invited to participate in that celebration. In 1896
the courthouse in Pulaski was erected with native stone. This same native stone was used to construct an arch, built in 1907, that was used as an entrance to the Pulaski County exhibit at the 1607-1907 exposition.
The arch was then dismantled and returned to Pulaski where it was permanently
displayed in front of the courthouse.
Prior to this find I did not know that a Medal had been struck to commemorate this event.
I intend to donate the medal to Pulaski Co , hopefully to be displayed at the courthouse.
