A little silver from my "new" old fairground
Hi Everyone,I haven't been getting in much detecting lately but after reading Jeff's (PA)post about an old fairground he had found and his old large cent it got me thinking about an old fairground I've known about for a couple years now but didn't think I could get permission as it's now been turned into a municipal airport.Well, I got the nerve and called this morning and the man in charge Ron said sure just stop by the office and introduce yourself and don't wander out on the landing strip and you should be fine. This fairground was used from the late 1800's and was still on the old map from 1933 but was shown as a private airstrip on the 1955 map so it was discontinued sometime between '33 and '55.Looking at the old map it appears that the new airstrip was built right over the old horse track but I figured there must be some original ground left somewhere so I gave it a shot.I covered a lot of area that appeared to maybe be original and only found one area that contained any keepers but I can go back anytime and search for more original ground, gotta be some more somewhere!I found 2 wheats,a '57D and a '45.Two IHP's an 1866 and a 1898.One liberty (V) nickle 1884.A stander no date (looks like its been thru a fire) and a 1902 barber dime.Glad I finally called,it was just that simple. That's two more "wilvers" for me Kirk.Well needless to say I'll be going back soon and looking for my second gold coin this year,a fair that old has got to have at least one lurking around there somewhere(hope its not under the tarmack)Oh yeah did I mention PROGRESS SUCKS!!!!Thanks for reading and best of luck to all!!
