Greetings, all, new guy here...thought I'd share my recent experience of prospecting for silver halfs over the past month....

I got the prospecting bug really bad a few weeks ago and decided to go full force through the month of March, hitting every bank I could. Prospecting definitely appeals to my Obsessive-Compulsive self and I am now fully in its grip..

I am fortunate to work in a large city that is teeming with banks, there are literally banks on every block. So, in the first week of March, I decided to hit them all....and for the first few days got nothing but dirty looks and blank stares from bank tellers, who seem to have no idea as to why I would want to get such large quantities of these monetary monstrosities.

Determined to find silver, I hit a couple of banks in one of the ethnic districts of the city....the very first bank I went to (in which not one single person save myself spoke English), I bought a few rolls and BINGO...found my first 40%. Hooked. Went back and bought them out the next day and found 2 more 40%'s....Doubly hooked. Over the next two weeks, I hit dozens of banks in the greater metro area and got nothing, not a single sliver of silver...worse, many of the tellers gave me the same stories: (1) "half dollars? Oh, no,no, we ship those off to the Fed as fast as we get them", (2) "Funny you should ask...a gentleman came in here last week and bought every last one from me" :BangHead: :BangHead:, and (3) "No, and even if we did, we wouldn't give you any unless you're a customer". As annoying as this was, even worse is asking for 10 rolls and having the teller pull them out and start crossing out the markings on the rolls, a sure sign that you will get skunked. You'd think they'd save you the trouble and just tell you outright that they have already been searched!

Yesterday, after two or three weeks of geting skunked, I decided to try two more city banks and call it quits for good if nothing turned up. First bank, nothing....at the second bank, I asked for $10 worth and they gave me 20 loose halfs from a huge bank bag...as I was walking out the door, I peaked at the coins sideways and immediately saw a 40% half....turned on my heel, went back in and immediately got $30 more, which yeilded 2 more 40%'s. Okay, that's what I'm talkin about!....Today, I went back with a bankroll and bought 300 halfs, hoping for a knockout.....but only picked up 2 more 40%'s, much lower than the percentage I got yesterday (I suspect someone at the bank may have figured out my game and picked through the bag).

And, so, that's my story....8-40% halfs in a month of prospecting..overall, I would say that only 1/4 of the banks have anything halfs at all and of those that do, VERY few have unsearched rolls ..I did well enough yesterday to keep myself in the game but I don't think I'm going to invest any more concentrated effort, as it just does not pay in terms of time and gas cost. Nevertheless, it is a fun diversion and who can complain bout finding silver?

Good luck all!

Welcome to the rat race. Glad you had at least some success hunting. I hope it picks up for you a bit more, then its really fun. What city are you in?

Greater Boston area here.....I've pretty much covered everything within 10-15 miles of the city, pretty slim pickins' here...whereabouts are you?

Welcome Chris

I thought your story was very interesting. Lot like my early days but with much better results. Unfortunately for you, as most of us have been talking about, the train may have already left the station. Sorry for your luck. Better luck in the future.

Be carefull though "The Addiction" is very strong. :stop: LOL

CRH Mojo

Funny how that goes Chris, but, you still have 8 40% halves to show for your effort.

I went to a funeral last week in a different state and I must have hit...9 banks total. The max I got out of any one bank was two rolls and my total "half dollar purchases" was about $60 worth. I did find 3 40% halves though, a fairly good ratio. I seem to get better results buying in lower quantities at multiple banks. It's like everything else worthwhile, if you really enjoy "it", then you will stick with it. I'm not getting rich from CRH, but my ownership of silver coins has increased, I have fun with my daughter and son - we all check them for silver and I enjoy chatting with the tellers. I really dislike people who act like assassins - anything at any cost and leaving dead bodies all over the place.

Everything starts with a relationship and anything can develop from there. I have to remind my kids, 12 and 10 years old, that CRH is like a savings account - it's not going to grow overnight and you have to be disciplined and save a little every paycheck.

Sorry for the long post, have fun and HH,

TSNF
