I am a lifelong Civil War buff and have been a reenactor for 14 years, first in Union infantry and then Confederate artillery. I have always wanted to get into relic/artifact recovery. Bought myself a detector back in July and got started. I am very fortunate that we have friends with pieces of property I can hunt. One is a small parcel on the Confederate side of Willoughby Run directly across from where the Iron Brigade fought on the first day. Another parcel is located along the Fairfield Road near the Black Horse Tavern where the Confederates camped and retreated after the battle. The other is located along the Fairfield Road outside of Fairfield. The site was travelled by the retreating army and also saw some cavalry action. These sites have been hunted before so I am not on "virgin" property. I consider it an honor to be able walk these grounds and to attempt to recover artifacts in these special places. The site near Willoughby Run has yielded a fired .58 minie, three roundballs, and shell fragments. The site near the Black Horse Tavern yielded a nice fragment of a Confederate 12 lb case ball with the fuze plug still intact. The Fairfield site so far only a melted minie. I am still learning and only have a few months under my belt but acres yet to search!
