A Newbie's First Finds

Newbie to the hobby and been detecting for just about a month and have exactly $2.00 to show for all my efforts. At this rate I will have pay off the cost of my detector sometime in the year 2015....lol. Can't complain though, my first trips out were more to get accustomed to the detector. And I got plenty of fresh air and exercise walking on the beach.

The picture only shows $1.31. The wife took the clean coins and dropped them into our change jar. I'm not too concerned though, they were all current coins.

Pete,
The more you practice with your machine the better you will get. You also need to do some research to be sure you are detecting in the right spots. There is a wealth of information on this site to read up on as well as a lot of nice folks that can answer any questions.

Re: A Newbie's First Finds

Glenn,

Thanks for the encouragement.

I've been reading post after post here and have gained a real wealth of knowledge so far. (Glad this is a real slow week at work. Nothing like getting paid to work on a hobby.)

Welcome Pete...when you least expect it a coin, ring or relic will pop up and knock your hat off...until then keep hunting. ::) :o TomB

Re: A Newbie's First Finds

Welcome Pete,
So now the addiction begins. I use a White's DFX for 2 years now and I'm still learning it :). but getting better with every hunt. Practice makes perfect the Prizm II is a good machine I seen people use them on the beach. It's a very good coin shooter. You live up in New York, That is a perfect spot for when you get enough experience you can go Revolution War Hunting. Good Luck and keep your chin up.

Pete:

As a former Long Islander, let me tell you that your area has the potential for some great treasures. In fact I would say some of the best posts on this forum have come from your immediate area! All it takes is patience and practice

Good luck!

Welcome to Tnet Pete. And welcome to all the other new people here as well.
You have found yourself one great hobby that over time will pay for it's self many times over, not only in the finds you find but in the friends you will make as well. If there is a detecting club in your area get involved, you'll be glad you did. Anyway, nice finds for your first month out, keep them coming.
Happy Hunting

Re: A Newbie's First Finds

Hang in there pesluder, if you put the time in, go to busy beaches and learn your machine you will find good stuff. Think of it as getting out in the fresh air, getting some exercise and having a lucky dip each time you go out. Agree with treasuredigger about research on this site, good info, keep swingin.

Re: A Newbie's First Finds

Hey Pete, Congrats on a good hunt! There is plenty more out there for you to find. As was mentioned, you get to spend a great day outside enjoying a hobby, the items are just a bonus!

Re: A Newbie's First Finds

Pete, welcome! You use the same machine as I do and I've found thousands of coins this year with it..paid for itself in 8 months..try the private yards, schools and soccer fields, you'll find quarters everywhere and also some jewelry.

Re: A Newbie's First Finds

You sound like me when I started last summer. I'd find a few pennies in a day and wonder what I was doing wrong. I have a White's M6. Over time, I have come to better understand all the information on the dial and the tones.
Unsolicited advice ;) would be use a 4X6 coil to better identify and close in on targets when you are in public areas like a park. And get a pinpointer if you don't have one! Once you use one, you will wonder how you managed without it. I use VibraProbe and love it. Targets almost always turn the same color as the soil and you can't see something right in front of your face. The pinpointer saves time and frustration.
If you hang in there and learn more about your detector, you will make money. Not a ton, but how many hobbies can make you money?? We got it goin' on with metal detecting!!
